Video Archive

The Video Archive follows and documents the process of the performance creation. It consists of recordings made during creative methodology, artistic creative process and a final product – the performance.
It is divided in three parts:

  • Work in progress video material made each month during local work on the performance of each partner (from June 2023 until January 2024);
  • Three documentary films – Pre-creative methodology documentary which consists of materials taken during Exchange of methodologies workshop; Creative methodology documentary movie which consists of materials taken during laboratory work on the performance of each partner; A performance-movie Paradox of Justice will consist of edited recordings of the performances in three cities;
  • An on-line performance available after performing in Bielefeld (Germany) from June 2024.

PLAVO Theatre

This video provides an insight how the theme of the performance is being analyzed and elaborated in discussions with the director, from personal point of view by each member of the artistic team.

The video also shows the work on creation of the actors’ materials. Actors work together or individually in the room where through the laboratory approach they search for the most adequate and truthful physical and vocal actions. The improvisations are triggered by a personal experience or a text related to the context of work.

Our fourth video shows research into the arrangement of the muscles of the back.

Based on the book “Albinus on Anatomy” (Robert Beverly Hale,Terence Coyle), we will try to familiarize ourselves with the details. It’s less about studying anatomy and more about gaining an understanding of the complexity of each individual movement. We zoom in, so to speak, into the four orders of the muscles – modeled by Albinus – in order to approach the topic of movement.

In our third video, a research on the quality of movement for the production can be seen in a first experimental arrangement.

The actors move on inclined planes. Their task is to move according to the principle of “means whereby”. The usual, or more common approach to such a task would be characterized by – as Alexander would call it – “end-gaining”. In our practice, we ask the actor not to move towards a goal, but to stay with the process of the movement itself. For the artistic process, this rethinking of the actor means approaching what Donna Haraway calls “critter” in which we strip the actor’s movements of the “culture” of habits, preconceptions, imprints, and intentions of wanting to express something. By focusing on the “means of the movement apparatus” and placing them in the focus of our thinking, the goal in which the “culture” would express itself, can disappear from view.

PLAVO Theatre

The video presents one of the most important and basic elements of the methodology of PLAVO Theatre, which is the actor’s daily training.

The actors practice mind-body-voice unity through the training as well as the ability to activate their will, energy and irrational playful capacities whenever it is necessary. They train to always be alive and authentic on the stage, no matter the circumstances. Specific body and voice work aims to unleash total capacities of expression of each individual, through transcending one’s limits and obstacles.

PLAVO Theatre

This video dives deeper into the musical material, giving an insight into music rehearsals of PLAVO and providing further motifs for selecting music of Rosa Balistreri, as a musical base of PLAVO’s local work.

In the methodology of PLAVO Theatre, music always functions as a sign, an integral element of the actor’s expression, and of the overall message. For this project, as a sign of injustice from the point of oppressed or marginalized people, of outsiders or those who are uprooted from their homeland, PLAVO chose harsh Sicilian sound from the past century, delivered by the hoarse voice of Rosa Balistreri.

In our second video you will see an introductory lesson in the Alexander Technique.

Indira, besides being a director, is also a trained AT teacher and in this lesson she introduces two initial working thoughts about the Alexander Technique.

  1. The Alexander Technique is the study of thinking in relation to movement.
  2. The poise of the head, in relation to the body in movement, is the key to freedom of lightness of movement.

In the course of the video you can see how these two thoughts are implemented in the pre-expressive work of the actresses. Alexandertechnique is a resource for the project both in the practical use of his teaching methods for a good “use of self” for the actors, and through his theoretical reflections in his texts.

PLAVO Theatre

The video of PLAVO Theatre reveals the reasons for choosing the literary and music material of PLAVO’s local work, which was proposed as a base of the creative process.

As a literary base PLAVO chose one of the most comprehensive authors on the existential paradox of human being in relation to justice and guilt, Franc Kafka, and his text “Before the Law”. Additional textual material, images, props etc. were proposed by actors individually, according to their personal approach to the theme. As a musical base for the performance, the sound of Sicilian icon of the twentieth century, singer and musician Rosa Balistreri, was chosen.

Documentary films

Pre-creative methodology of laboratory theatre process

The documentary film titled Pre-creative methodology of laboratory theatre process, was created during Exchange of methodologies workshop, which took place in Plavo Theatre in Belgrade from May 31 – June 2, 2023. The project partners, Plavo Theatre – theatre laboratory (Serbia), Theaterlabor Bielefeld (Germany) and the Grotowski Institute (Poland), presented to each other and shared between themselves their core methodologies which are to be applied in the work on the mutual theatrical co-production.
